Please visit the Office of Admissions to begin the graduate school application process at Illinois State University. Because the application process can be overwhelming, a checklist has been developed to guide you through the process.

Requirements include:

  • An undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 based on the last 60 hours of undergraduate work
Applicants with a GPA of less than 3.0 but higher than the university minimum may be considered for admission if combined GRE scores on the verbal and quantitative sections are at or above the 40th percentile (approximately 148-verbal and 147-quantitative). The analytical writing assessment portion of the GRE general test will also be used in considering applicants.
  • For all sequences except Exercise Physiology, three letters of recommendation from faculty familiar with your potential for graduate study; it is strongly recommended that at least one come from an academic with a terminal degree (i.e., Ph.D, Ed.D). You will indicate in your online application who will be serving as your references. Those individuals will receive an email with with instructions on how to submitt the recommendation letter.
  • Exercise Physiology Applicants: Exercise Physiology faculty only require the contact information for three (3) references.
  • Submission of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores on the verbal, quantitative, and analytic writing assessments. If you have not taken the GRE, please schedule it as soon as possible and be sure to have the results officially reported to institution 1319 (Illinois State University) by Educational Testing Service. For more information, please visit the GRE Web site.
    • The GRE is not required for the following sequences: Physical Education Teacher Education, Recreation Administration.
  • The online application will require the following items to be attached:
    • Submission of a statement of your career goals explaining your interest in one of the following areas of specialization: Athletic Training, Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Physical Education Teacher Education, Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity, Recreation Administration, or Sport Management.
    • Submission of a resume outlining your education and work history (2 page maximum).

Application Review Process

Exercise Physiology, Fall only
Physical Education Pedagogy, Fall, Spring, Summer
Psychology of Sport, Fall only

For entrance into the Graduate Program in KNR:

  • You must meet the admission criteria outlined above.
  • You must also be accepted by the faculty in your sequence. This latter decision will be based, in part, on your career goals, your GPA in courses related to the area of specialization, your GRE scores and the availability of space in the chosen area.

Students without a background in Kinesiology or Recreation may be admitted, but additional undergraduate prerequisites to graduate coursework will be required. Exceptions to these criteria are made on a case-by-case basis.

Before applying to the program, prospective students are encouraged to contact faculty in their sequence of interest to discuss acceptance into the program. Consideration for acceptance depends on current enrollments and anticipated openings for the next semester.
