Esther Larson McGinnis Travel Awards

The McGinnis Travel Awards assist Kinesiology and Recreation students to attend regional, state, and national conferences. Applications for spring 2017 are due on February 13, 2017.

Trent Richards Scholarship

The Trent Richards Scholarship is given to a Kinesiology and Recreation junior with demonstrated strong academic achievement.

Jorndt Graduate Student/Faculty Research Award

In 1967, Mr. Louis C. Jorndt contributed funds to the Illinois State University Foundation to support research projects in the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. For over 40 years, the Jorndt Award has recognized meritorious research conducted as a collaboration between a graduate student and faculty mentor.

The Jorndt Graduate Student/Faculty Research Award is given annually to a graduate student and faculty advisor who have disseminated research of the highest quality under the most stringent review either through presentation or publication. The award is presented at the KNR Academic Achievement and Service Awards ceremony held each spring.  Selection of the award winner is made by either the KNR chair, a chair designee (e.g., grad. coordinator), and/or a selection committee of 3 if more than one qualified nomination is made.

The email application, submitted by the faculty member, consists of providing the following information:

  • Nominee names and email addresses
  • Title of Research
  • Conference(s)/Journal(s) where disseminated
  • Brief Description of contributions of faculty member and student to research project.

Nominations are solicited from faculty by an email sent out early in the spring semester. The specific application format is provided at that time.

Dr. L. Marlene Mawson Graduate Research Potential Award

In 2005, Dr. L. Marlene Mawson (chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation from 1990-1999) contributed funds to the Illinois State University Foundation for the support of graduate student research in the School of Kinesiology and Recreation.

The Dr. L. Marlene Mawson Graduate Research Potential Award is given annually to recognize and financially assist the graduate student who has demonstrated excellence in research concept and design, and who has the greatest potential to complete and disseminate the thesis or dissertation research. The award is presented at the KNR Academic Achievement and Service Awards ceremony held each spring.  Selection of the award winner is made by either the KNR chair, a chair designee (e.g., grad. coordinator), and/or a selection committee of 3 if more than one qualified nomination is made.

The email application, submitted by the thesis/dissertation committee chair, consists of providing the following information:

  • Student name and email address, thesis/dissertation title, committee member names
  • An overview of the proposed research project.
  • An assessment of the student’s potential to complete the proposed research
  • Any additional information regarding student’s research contributions (e.g., independent research projects/presentations, grant support, awards, etc)
  • Verification that the thesis/dissertation proposal form has been forwarded to the Graduate School.
  • Budget of expenses for data collection and/or dissemination of the research.
  • Timeline for data collection, defense, and graduation.
  • A plan for dissemination of the completed research as a student-authored presentation/publication at a national conference or in a national journal.

Sandra Little Groves Recreation and Park Administration Faculty Development Award

The Sandra Little Groves Award provides financial assistance for pre-tenured faculty with a preference to Recreation and Park Administration faculty.

College of Applied Science and Technology

  • Dean’s Scholarship - Dean's Scholarship are $1,000 four-year renewable scholarships awarded to outstanding new freshman students within the College of Applied Science and Technology. 
  • Larry R. Miller Scholarship - The Larry R. Miller Scholarship is for an undergraduate student enrolled as a major in a program in the college who has completed 60 hours of credit course work, 30 of which should have been completed at Illinois State University
  • Outstanding Student Researcher Award - The CAST Oustanding Student Researcher Award recognizes significant undergraduate and graduate research projects conducted by CAST students and annually identifies one student or a group of students who have participated in a project of significance
