Academic Advising
All declared KNR majors and minors with 25 or more earned hours are advised within the School of Kinesiology and Recreation. All students with 24 or fewer hours, and all undeclared students are advised in University College.
Students with last names A-K are advised by Mindy Kinney. Students with last names L-Z are advised by Daphyne Walker.
To make an appointment to see either advisor please call (309) 438-5782 or stop in the main office in McCormick 250. Advisors will not schedule appointments via email.
Students should plan to see their advisor at least once per semester. Appointments are generally 15 minutes long during registration periods, and 30 minutes at all other times of the year.
For long term planning (creating a plan of study, planning out several semesters of courses) please make your appointments early in the semester so you can be guaranteed 30 minutes with an advisor. In appointments during advanced registration the advisors will only discuss the upcoming semester.
Please be prepared for your appointment – arrive on time and bring with you a list of questions you would like to go over with your advisor. You can prepare for your appointment by reviewing your requirements using iCampus “Progress Toward My Degree,” the Undergraduate Catalog, and the sequence sheets for your particular major.
It is important for all students to understand their responsibilities in the advising process. Students are responsible for understanding and meeting all academic requirements.
In order to accomplish this it is vital that students meet with their advisor on a regular basis, check their ilstu.edu email accounts regularly for communication from their advisors and the university, and to assume responsibility for how their academic decisions may impact their degree progress.
As advisors, it is our responsibility to assist you in navigating your academic requirements, to assist you in making informed course decisions, and to refer you to appropriate resources and services at Illinois State University.
